Which Elite Dangerous companion app?

Elite Nexus replaces most of a typical toolkit, not all of it. Here is how it lines up against the tools commanders run today, including what they still do better.

At a glance

Where each tool runs, and what it does.

Recorded in October 2026 from each project's own documentation, release notes and issue trackers. Dashes mean the tool doesn't do it; where a capability comes from a plugin, the plugin is named.

Elite Nexus runs the Spansh planners inside the app (neutron, exact, fleet carrier, Road to Riches, Exomastery) and syncs with Inara, so the two websites are partners rather than rivals here.

In fairness

What the others still do better.

Reasons to keep one of them around, or to pick it instead.

EDDiscovery

A history "time machine": every panel can show your state at any past event, across some sixty panel types. Full-galaxy 3D and 2D maps over a Spansh or EDSM star database, with trilateration. Scripting, overlay panels, DLL and Python plugins, a tablet web server and the Frontier Companion API. Elite Nexus's galaxy map shows only where you've been.

ED Market Connector

The Frontier Companion API (market, shipyard, outfitting, carrier) and a plugin registry Elite Nexus has no answer to: plugins’ own overlays, BGS-Tally reports to Discord, EDR intel, landing pads, mining analytics, Powerplay progress. Elite Nexus uploads to the same services itself, so run one uploader, not two.

Elite Observatory

Your own Lua criteria, shareable as packs, and plugins without an equivalent here: GeoPredictor, Photographer, Stat Scanner's galactic records, Aggregator, Archivist. BioInsights predicts colour variants, which Elite Nexus doesn't. Pop-ups update in place, with SSML voice, chimes and a choice of output device.

Odyssey Materials Helper

A full ship builder with in-game-accurate stats, a suit and weapon loadout editor and a bartender simulator; Elite Nexus opens your build in EDSY or Coriolis instead. An engineer route planner with pins and unlock visits, permit-aware trader search, Community Goals with tier prediction, multi-commander support and an OCR overlay.

Exploration Buddy

Route lock with team import and export, teammates' discoveries highlighted per hop, form-based points-of-interest rules with spoken templates, a transparent in-game HUD that auto-hides, and a "surroundings" view of the 25 nearest systems.

EDHM

The established HUD mod recolours single HUD elements, which Elite Nexus's matrix-based editor cannot (the game has one colour matrix for the whole interface). The two can't run side by side: both hook the game's shaders. Elite Nexus's angle is keeping hostile red, friendly green and shield blue under any theme, plus the cockpit-light dimmer and glare presets.

Inara

Commander profile, fleet, ranks and reputation pages, faction and squadron pages, nearest faction by state, Community Goals, Galpedia and the Powerplay picture. Elite Nexus syncs your profile there and links to it; it doesn't try to replace the site.

Spansh

Galaxy-wide system, station, body and signal searches with filters, nightly data dumps, and plotters Elite Nexus doesn't expose: tourist and colonisation routes, "saved bodies" exclusions. Elite Nexus uses Spansh's planners and its dump; the website still has more of them.

Which should you use?

Straight answers.

Is Elite Nexus a replacement for EDDiscovery?

For most everyday use, yes: exploration values and highlights, exobiology, engineering, missions, carrier and colonisation tracking, a logbook with full-text search, statistics and the community uploads are all there, in one native app that starts in about a second. EDDiscovery still has what Elite Nexus doesn't: the per-event history view, full-galaxy maps with trilateration, scripting, plugins and the Frontier Companion API. Commanders who switched say memory use was their reason; take that from their own words on the forums rather than from this page.

Is it a replacement for ED Market Connector?

If you run EDMC only to feed EDDN, EDSM and Inara, Elite Nexus does that itself, with the same opt-in switches and live events only. If you rely on EDMC's plugins (BGS-Tally, EDR, an in-game overlay) or on the Companion API, keep EDMC and switch Elite Nexus's uploads off, or the other way round: one uploader per service is enough.

Can I run it alongside Elite Observatory?

Yes. Observatory uploads nothing from its core, so there is no double-sending. You would keep it for your own Lua criteria, BioInsights' colour-variant predictions or the plugins listed above, and use Elite Nexus for the sampling radar, the bonus hunt, markets and the rest.

What about Odyssey Materials Helper?

Elite Nexus covers the engineering planner, the materials shopping list and the trader plan, and adds live markets, exploration and the cockpit tools. Odyssey Materials Helper keeps the ship builder, the engineer route planner, Community Goals and multi-commander support. Both upload to EDDN, so switch one off.

Does it replace Inara and Spansh?

No, and it doesn't try to. Elite Nexus runs Spansh's planners inside the app and syncs your profile to Inara; the websites remain the place for galaxy-wide searches, Community Goals, squadrons and Galpedia. What you stop doing is alt-tabbing for routes, prices and material traders.

Which is the best Elite Dangerous companion app?

It depends on what you fly for. One native app with live EDDN market data, exobiology, exploration, engineering and HUD colours that keep hostile red: Elite Nexus. The deepest history and galaxy maps: EDDiscovery. The widest plugin ecosystem: ED Market Connector. Custom scan criteria: Elite Observatory. A ship builder and engineer routing: Odyssey Materials Helper. Nothing stops you combining them; just let one app do the uploading.

About this comparison

How it was made, and how to correct it.

Platforms, licences and features were recorded in October 2026 from each project's public documentation, release notes and issue trackers; the websites were checked by hand. All of the apps above were actively maintained at the time. Elite Nexus's own row comes from its user guide. Tools change: if something here is out of date or unfair, open an issue and it will be fixed. Every name belongs to its project; Elite Nexus is an unofficial community tool.
